About the Author
Jonathan Berk is the A.P. Giannini Professor of Finance at the Graduate School of Business, Stanford University and is a Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research. Before coming to Stanford, he was the Sylvan Coleman Professor of Finance at Haas School of Business at the University of California, Berkeley. Prior to earning his Ph.D., he worked as an Associate at Goldman Sachs (where his education in finance really began).

Professor Berk’s research interests in finance include corporate valuation, capital structure, mutual funds, asset pricing, experimental economics, and labor economics. His work has won a number of research awards including the TIAA-CREF Paul A. Samuelson Award, the Smith Breeden Prize, Best Paper of the Year in The Review of Financial Studies, and the FAME Research Prize. His paper, “A Critique of Size-Related Anomalies,” was selected as one of the two best papers ever published in The Review of Financial Studies. In recognition of his influence on the practice of finance he has received the Bernstein-Fabozzi/Jacobs Levy Award, the Graham and Dodd Award of Excellence, and the Roger F. Murray Prize. He served as an Associate Editor of the Journal of Finance for eight years, is currently an Academic Director of the Financial Management Association, and is a member of the advisory board of the Journal of Portfolio Management.

Born in Johannesburg, South Africa, Professor Berk is married, with two daughters, and is an avid skier and biker.

Peter DeMarzo is the Mizuho Financial Group Professor of Finance and Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs at the Stanford Graduate School of Business. He is also a Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research. He currently teaches MBA and Ph.D. courses in Corporate Finance and Financial Modeling. In addition to his experience at the Stanford Graduate School of Business, Professor DeMarzo has taught at the Haas School of Business and the Kellogg Graduate School of Management, and he was a National Fellow at the Hoover Institution.

Professor DeMarzo received the Sloan Teaching Excellence Award at Stanford in 2004 and 2006, and the Earl F. Cheit Outstanding Teaching Award at U.C. Berkeley in 1998. Professor DeMarzo has served as an Associate Editor for The Review of Financial Studies, Financial Management, and the B.E. Journals in Economic Analysis and Policy, as well as a Director of the American Finance Association. He has served as Vice President and is currently President-elect of the Western Finance Association. Professor DeMarzo’s research is in the area of corporate finance, asset securitization, and contracting, as well as market structure and regulation. His recent work has examined issues of the optimal design of contracts and securities, the regulation of insider trading and broker-dealers, and the influence of information asymmetries on corporate investment. He has received numerous awards including the Western Finance Association Corporate Finance Award and the Barclays Global Investors/Michael Brennan best-paper award from The Review of Financial Studies.

About the Author

Leonhard Emmerling received his doctorate from the University of Heidelberg for a thesis titled ‘Kunsttheorie Jean Dubuffets’. Since 2010 he has headed the Visual Arts Division at the Goethe Institute’s head office in Munich and was previously active as a curator at various art institutions in Germany. The pictures in this small book were a decent selection and sharpness--no complaints. The commentary offered some context, albeit distracting and unclear at times. Here's an example of Emmerling's editorializing: "Basquiat's work thus documents the progressive construction of the artist's discordant identity, of a man grappling with the reality that he could make little use of the patterns available to him--either of his father's existence as an accountant who adopted the ideals of the white middle class, or the ghetto kid attitude of the graffiti sprayer" (89). How did Basquiat "make little use of the patterns available to him"? He has over 2000 works of art. How did his father "adopt the ideals of the white middle class"? What does that even mean? And what is a "ghetto kid attitude"? There are more examples of Emmerling not explaining or citing his claims, many of which involve Emmerling playing up the "racist" attitudes of collectors and how Basquiat was a victim.

They clearly didn’t front the copywrite money for his better pieces. Though I’m sure it would have been incredibly expensive..

I purchased the book to display his art on my living room wall. I love every piece provided- def tells a story.

Rose petals, angelica powder, barberries and dried Persian limes are among the unusual elements that will awaken Western palates in the fare served up by chef and teacher Batmanglij (New Food of Life). Before presenting an array of recipes aimed at the adventurous cook, she notes that the cuisine of Persia (known as Iran, since 1935) is akin to Chinese in that it is thousands of years old. Some dishes, such as Shish Kabab and other skewered meals, are familiar, but many will be decidedly exotic to the uninitiated: Pistachio Soup is based on the nut with a name derived from a Persian word; Sweet and Sour Stuffed Chicken boasts a filling of onion, garlic, prunes, apples, dried apricots and cinnamon; a spice rarely used in this country flavors Grilled Fish with Sumac. Thirteen braised dishes known as khoreshes include Rhubarb Khoresh, which can be made with either chicken or red meat. Most Persian rice dishes are cooked so that a savory golden crust, known as tah dig, forms on the bottom. Desserts include Rose Water Rice Pudding and a labor-intensive Baklava. Cooks accustomed to simple recipes will find other complicated offerings, such as Jeweled Rice, but most are not overly intimidating. Color photos and a dictionary of terms and ingredients are helpful, as is a resource guide to groceries and restaurants.

Najmieh Batmanglij was raised in a very traditional family in Iran. She has spent the last 20 years cooking, researching and collecting authentic Persian recipes. Her books include: Ma Cuisine d'Iran (Paris, 1984), Food of Life (Mage, 1986), and Persian Cooking For A Healthy Kitchen (Mage, 1994). She is currently working on a vegetarian cookbook.
