Review

Named one of "11 Books that Will Make You Smarter about Politics" by Business Insider"If you read no other political book this year, read THE POPULIST EXPLOSION by John B. Judis, which brilliantly sets out the connection to present circumstances." -- Mark Mardell, BBC"John B. Judis's The Populist Explosion was published just before Mr. Trump's election, but that improbable victory only confirms the book's thesis that Western democracies are in some ways failing to represent their citizens....Mr. Judis's analysis is sharp and engaging." - Barton Swaim, The Wall Street Journal "Writing from the left, with a qualified admiration for the populist impulse, Judis contends that populist insurgencies historically have served as warning signs of larger brewing political crises." -- Tory Newmyer, Fortune "A cogent and exceptionally clarifying guide to a political phenomenon that is at once elusive and, yes, explosive."-- Jonathan Alter, The New York Times Book Review"Shows why journalists who have a sense of history, and its irony, need not be bewildered by the astonishing revolt against globalized elites in our time." -- Pankaj Mishra, Bloomberg "The Populist Explosion is far and away the most incisive examination of the central development in contemporary politics: the rise of populism on both the right and the left. John Judis, whose track record is unrivaled, is the ideal author to tackle the subject, and he has done a superb job, placing contemporary trends, including the rise of Donald Trump, in historical perspective. Judis demonstrates the crucial role of the 2008 recession both here and in Europe in discrediting the neoliberal agenda. This is must reading."-- Thomas Edsall, New York Times columnist"A sweeping narrative -- rich in historical and political argument -- that ably ties together the insurgencies on both sides of the Atlantic."-- The Nation"John Judis, in The Populist Explosion, has written a terrific short book that is a brisk tour of the horizon, of the right and left versions of populism, their history and current state, with a useful comparison of the populist upsurge in the United States and Europe."--The American Prospect"The Populist Explosion blends groundbreaking reporting with insightful scholarship in the best guide yet to the most important political phenomenon of our time."--Michael Lind, author of Land of Promise: An Economic History of the United States"John Judis demonstrates again why he is one of America's best political journalists. There is no wiser or better informed analysis of contemporary voter discontent on both sides of the Atlantic than The Populist Explosion."-- Michael Kazin, editor of Dissent, author of The Populist Persuasion: An American History and War Against War: The American Fight for Peace, 1914-1918"What does history tell us about the future? John Judis, the author of THE POPULIST EXPLOSION, says that America may be just in the first phase of its new populist insurrection." - Sydney Morning Herald"The fact remains that in The Populist Explosion, as elsewhere, Judis hews to a much higher standard of sociological and political analysis than nearly any other American liberal. Whatever he makes of the situation, he faces it more squarely than most." -- Tim Barker, New Left Review

It's a pretty good analysis of how Populism has become popular.I will warn you that the first part of the book is actually the weakest part. The author initially tries to relate the obscure 1890s American Populist party to modern-day Populist parties, but I found this to be a bit of a stretch. Also, the author asserts that non-American countries had no prior experiences with Populism until recently, but he fails to back up this assertion sufficiently, or at all for that matter. The book gets much better when the author starts talking about modern day Populist parties around the world -- how they came to be, what they believe, and how they get votes. At least here everything is well backed up with quotes, statistics, and facts, some of which are quite interesting and all of which are relevant. The quality of the writing here is really great and the book would warrant a 5 star rating if not for the weaker early chapters. When this book was published Trump had won the GOP primary but had not been elected President yet. So Trump is mentioned, but only as a candidate, not a President. If you're interested in learning about Populism this is a good read!

Along with many others, the election was somewhat of a shock for me - a typical upper left hand coast academic. The day after the election, I heard an interview with the author and went straight to amazon and bought this book. I think he does a good job at describing the context of the trends within our political culture, however I get the distinct impression that they were even more surprised by the results than I was. One of the comments he made during the interview related to his pessimism that the driving forces of the populist movement that backed Trump (or Sanders) would be satisfied by the result. Specifically, much of what was felt to be the problem, such as the loss of quality jobs for low skill, low education workers, had no easy solution.

With the recent tense US elections, many labels describing opponents have been applied to both Democrats and Republicans without really understanding the underlying motivations driving the shift by voters to oppose establishment candidates, both within the US and in the EU. This refreshing overview provides helpful context of historical populist movements, and how we might see the new situations playing out around the world today. Thought-provoking read, recommended for those who are ready to move beyond condescending labels to solve real problems.

Excellent review of both the modern US and European populist movements and the history of the movement in the US over a century ago. I found this book helpful putting in perspective the recent US elections and in understanding a little better the motivations and concerns of groups that do not necessarily reflect my own opinions. Highly recommended.

Listed as one of the top ten books to understand Trump's win, I was immediately drawn in. I loved the flow of the book, from the history of early American populist movements like the No-Name Party to modern times. It's laced with a thorough understanding of economics that has shaped populism. And I didn't think I would enjoy it, but I appreciated the section on modern European populism which demonstrated that nationalist protectionism that uses immigrants as scapegoats is a widespread phenomenon. learned so much by reading this book, I highly recommend it.

There is an incredible amount of misinformation about populism. The most common error is to characterize all populism as xenophobic. This terrific book places today's populism in a detailed history. I learned a lot, which is why I read, and they came away with a much better understanding of what is going on in the world today, another good reason to read. It's pretty hard to find a more important movement in politics than populism. By it. You'll like it.

John B. Judis wrote a good, short, and accessible book on the topic. The volume's strength is it concise empirical description and avoidance of neo-Marxist/post-structuralist jargon, with which Judis is clearly familiar, but which he avoids. I am using the text as my college textbook in a course on the topic of modern populism. However, let me see how students react to the text.

A detailed look at various populist movements, both historical and contemporary. I was hoping for more analysis of populism but got just details of the populist movements. Not a fault, just something I was disappointed in. If you're interested in populist movements, this is a good place to look
